Technical Design

da Vinci's Flying Machine, Utah State University, 2005
Challenge
A model of da Vinci's Flying Machine must fly across the stage at three times during the production, each time towing a different sign.  The set is in view at all times, which means the Machine can not be flown in to make the change.
Solution
Engineer a pivoting carriage that rides in a curtain track, enabling it to be pulled manually from offstage.  Use a set of welding magnets to prevent mechanism from pivoting during travel.  Rotation and sign change can be accomplished quickly and easily offstage using a personnel lift.

The Rivals Baluster, Northern Arizona University, 2006
Challenge
Build a baluster with twenty-eight custom pins in less than two weeks.  In response to director inspiration, change design within 3 days to support two actors fighting with swords.
Solution
Create custom rig that allows styrofoam blanks to be quickly turned on a drill press while reproducing  profile.  Build a metal substructure to support actors.
